Permeable Patio

Rain water that lands on hard, solid surfaces such as patios and rooftops concentrates as it flows away, instead of being soaked up naturally by plants and soils. This stormwater runoff is a source of water pollution as it dumps harmful particulates into our waterways.

A Permeable Patio allows stormwater to seep into the ground, reducing the amount of water runoff and pollution from our homes and landscapes.  Consider a permeable patio instead of other conventional, non-porous surfaces to reduce your environmental footprint.

***Some municipalities, such as Lancaster City and Philadelphia, provide financial credits to homeowners who install permeable patios. ***

There are many different permeable paving materials; however, they are all sustainable and allow water to flow through their surface or through porous joints in between the blocks. While other nonporous materials direct water to storm-drains, these surfaces help groundwater recharge by allowing water to flow into open spaces between the materials. These porous materials also filter pollutants and solids from the water as it percolates through the surface.
